Heather Stang

Mindfulness-Based Grief Support

Biography

Heather Stang, MA, C-IAYT, is a grief educator, author, and mindfulness-based group facilitator who helps people navigate life after loss with compassion, clarity, and connection. She is the recipient of the 2025 Clinical Practice Award from the Association for Death Education and Counseling, recognizing her innovative and heart-centered work in grief care.

Heather holds a Master’s Degree in Thanatology, the study of death, dying, and bereavement, from Hood College. She is also an Integrated Attachment Theory™ Coach and a Certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist. She is the founder of the Mindfulness & Grief Institute, where she leads Awaken, a weekly online group program, and offers individual sessions grounded in mindfulness, somatic awareness, and attachment-informed support.

She is the author of Navigating Loss, Living With Grief (formerly Mindfulness & Grief) and the guided journal From Grief To Peace. Her integrative approach blends contemplative practice with evidence-based techniques to support emotional regulation, meaning-making, and post-traumatic growth. Her work has been featured in Superhero Grief, Seasons of Grief, Techniques of Grief Therapy, and the forthcoming Handbook of Grief Therapies.

Heather’s path to this work is deeply personal. After losing her uncle to suicide in childhood and later facing a stress-related illness while leading a tech company, she turned to mindfulness and yoga for healing. This inspired her work as a suicide and crisis hotline volunteer and researcher, and eventually led to a full-time career supporting others through grief.

She also hosts the Mindfulness & Grief Podcast, serves on the advisory board of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), and provides training for organizations including the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, and Hospice Foundation of America.

Whether working with individuals, groups, or professionals, Heather brings a calm, compassionate presence and deep respect for the grieving process. Her work gently supports the journey from pain to peace, grounded in research and guided by heart.
